The Time is Always Now
Organised by the National Portrait Gallery and curated by writer, journalist and broadcaster Ekow Shun, The Time is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure showcased nearly 50 works of painting, drawing and sculpture by 22 of the UK and USA's most important living artists. Confronting difficult histories such as slavery, colonialism, and racism, while also celebrating the richness and diversity of Black life, the internationally touring show includes works by 2017 Turner Prize nominee Hurvin Anderson, 2017 Turner Prize winner Lubaina Himid, 1998 Turner Prize winner Chris Ofili, Michelle Obama portraitist Amy Sherald, and 2023 Turner Prize nominee Barbara Walker. Intercity created a bold and colourful identity for the show – a design scheme that spanned both exhibition graphics and accompanying promotional campaign.
