Gendering the Museum
Gendering the Museum is a collaborative project directed by James Daybell and Kit Heyam, which aims to help change the representation of gender in museums, galleries and heritage sites – providing an easy-to-use toolkit for all for curatorial, interpretation, programming and front-of-house staff. The Gendering the Museum team has already worked on a number of fascinating projects, including with the V&A in London and the Vasa Museum in Sweden.
Created in 2024, our identity for the project takes inspiration from the concept of peeling back the surface layer to reveal the hidden stories beneath. A graphic sticker device is used for the primary logo lock-up and secondary icon, as well as for display text and lead imagery.

James Daybell, Professor of Early Modern British History at the University of Plymouth"Collaborating with Intercity on Gendering The Museum was a brilliant experience. The project required sensitivity, clarity, and a strong visual identity—and Intercity delivered on all fronts. They created an identity and website that feels both thoughtful and dynamic, allowing complex content to be explored with ease and impact. Their ability to adapt as the project evolved was invaluable, always bringing fresh ideas and technical precision, and I’m deeply grateful for their work."
