About (Back Cover Text)

In recent years the sneaker scene has exploded with artist and designer collaborations. These specialist shoes are produced as short runs, using innovative or luxury materials, and often have bespoke packaging. Some even push the design of the shoes themselves, creating hybrids or new incarnations of classic designs.

Focusing exclusively on contemporary, cutting-edge sneaker design, Art & Sole sets out to explore and to celebrate the creative side of sneaker culture – showing the best and most original rarities and collaborations. These are not shoes that can be found in your average sports store.

The book also highlights how a growing number of artists base their work on sneakers – from sculptures made from dissected shoes, to oil paintings on canvas, and even the customization of the shoes themselves.

Artwork from the book was also on show, including original works by INSA and Art & Sole cover artist Dave White - who was also signing copies of the book.

About

To celebrate the release of the mini-edition Art & Sole, Intercity worked with Nike to design the Special Edition Art & Sole Cortez iD sneaker collection.

As part of the project, Intercity commissioned four artists - Jiro Bevis, Matthew Nicholson, Shantell Martin and Rose Stallard - to create an artwork for one of four limited edition Art & Sole book covers. Working with different media; print, moving image, sculpture and sneaker-art respectively, the artists' brief was simply to interpret the Cortez sneaker using a specifically assigned colour - red, magenta, green or blue - which correlated to the category-signifying contents dots of Art & Sole. A book featuring each artist's artwork was then packaged in a bespoke sneaker box alongside a pair of the Art & Sole Cortez sneakers. The moving image piece created by Shantell Martin was also included within the packs on a Cortez-shaped flash-drive.

The sneakers themselves are tonal grey, referencing the blank-canvas shoe colour that is synonymous with NIKEiD (Nike By You), and have a gum outsole that pays homage to the first ever Cortez. We also added an embroidered ampersand to the heel and a colour-coded accent in the lining of the shoe to coordinate with the associated artwork.

A launch party for the project was held at the Nike Studio in Boxpark, London, with all four artworks on display and music supplied by Mikill Pane, Will Power and B.Traits. Additional activities included a silent auction (to win one of the packs) with proceeds going to local youth-led charity Art Against Knives, plus a design a Cortez iD competition (judged by Intercity). There was also colour-coordinated food in the form of pie & mash - with red, magenta, green and blue-coloured mash to match the Art & Sole Cortez shoes.
